BMW rolls out stretched X1 in India from Rs 49.90 lakh with extra rear legroom
BMW has introduced a long-wheelbase variant of its entry crossover in India, assembling the roomier X1 locally in Chennai with an opening price tag of Rs 49.90 lakh.

What Happened
BMW Group India began selling an extended-wheelbase version of the X1 on 21 August, pricing the compact luxury crossover from an introductory Rs 49.90 lakh ex-showroom. Built on assembly lines at the company's Chennai factory, the variant is tailored toward buyers who spend their commute in the back seat rather than behind the steering wheel.

The mechanical setup relies on a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol motor turning out 156 hp alongside 230 Nm of torque. Drive heads to the front axle through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The chassis stretch adds 108 mm between the axles, taking total wheelbase to 2,800 mm and opening up roughly 109 mm of extra knee space.
Customer orders opened on 10 August ahead of the formal rollout. Deliveries are now getting under way across the brand's national retail footprint.
Why this matters
Indian luxury buyers heavily favor chauffeur-driven rear comfort even in compact footprints. By stretching the X1's wheelbase by more than a hundred millimeters, BMW is bringing a limousine-style rear bench to its entry price tier, matching a formula it already uses on the 3 Series Gran Limousine.
