What Happened
Daimler Buses is comprehensively upgrading its coach portfolio, and the product update covers the Mercedes-Benz Tourismo, the Travego that is offered exclusively in Turkey, and the Setra ComfortClass, TopClass HDH and S 531 DT. The technical innovations will be introduced successively from 2027, with specific launch dates and equipment scopes varying by model series and vehicle configuration. The details now released add technical depth to the product updates announced at IAA Transportation 2026, covering powertrain, electronic architecture, assistance systems and the driver workplace. Rather than individual components, engines, transmissions, electronics, assistance systems and the cockpit are being developed together to create a common technical platform for the European coach portfolio.

The new engine generation works together with the new ZF transmissions and additional vehicle and software optimizations, and the result depends on engine variant and vehicle configuration. New or modified coatings for the diesel particulate filter and SCR system contribute to efficiency and robustness, while long maintenance intervals and a design engineered for high mileages support economical operation and high vehicle availability. The automated 12-speed ZF TraXon 2 transmission is standard equipment, and the ZF EcoLife 2 CoachLine automatic is optionally available for both engines and all power ratings, with the Setra ComfortClass S 511 offered exclusively with the CoachLine transmission. In the CoachLine unit, the TopoDyn topography-based shift program automatically adapts the shifting strategy to the route profile, and newly designed torsional dampers reduce vibrations and noise for added driving comfort. The enhanced Predictive Powertrain Control, available depending on model series and equipment specification, can now use map data from rural roads as well as motorways and predictively handles acceleration and braking on winding serpentine routes within its system limits.
“The requirements placed on coaches are constantly increasing. Operators expect maximum efficiency, drivers expect modern support systems, and passengers expect a high level of comfort. With the comprehensive update of our coach portfolio, we are addressing exactly these requirements.”
- Active Sideguard Assist 3 supports drivers in critical turning and lane-changing situations, can warn of a collision risk and can brake automatically in defined situations within its system limits.
- In conjunction with comfort steering, Active Sideguard Assist 3 can also initiate a supportive steering movement during a critical lane change.
- Active Cross Traffic Assist complements existing assistance systems in crossing-traffic situations and can assist with automatic braking interventions within its system limits.
- Software updates can be installed remotely on selected control units via over-the-air updates, meaning fewer workshop visits solely for software updates.
- The fleet operator decides when an update is installed and on which vehicles, so the process fits operational workflows and increases vehicle uptime.
The Multimedia Cockpit Interactive combines a high-resolution main display, a touch display and a newly designed multifunction steering wheel, operated through physical switches, new steering wheel controls and digital control elements, with frequently used applications directly accessible or stored in an individually configurable favorites menu and selected commands executed by voice control. The navigation system is tailored to bus operations and uses up-to-date map data and live traffic information, with bus-specific parameters such as length, height and maximum axle load stored and adjusted for route planning. The Navigation Services Package, easily activated via the OMNIplus ON portal after vehicle delivery, gives operators three years of continuous over-the-air map updates, live traffic information such as traffic jam alerts, online route suggestions and Connected Traffic Warnings about events like side winds or dangerous sections free of charge after activation, and destinations can be sent to the vehicle through the portal. The driver sound system adds a Private Mode for phone calls, system notifications or chosen podcasts without disturbing passengers.
Visibility is further enhanced by a new generation of the 360-degree camera system, which integrates its display into the touch display of the Multimedia Cockpit Interactive and uses a wider viewing angle, higher resolution and dynamic overlays to show pedestrians, cyclists or obstacles even in areas not directly visible from the driver's seat; four cameras capture the vehicle's immediate surroundings. Depending on equipment specification, Park Pilot with acoustic and visual warnings and a transparent chassis display extend the functions to help when maneuvering. The Setra S 531 DT also receives a completely newly developed chassis with a new, lower-maintenance axle, controlled dampers, driving dynamics tuned specifically to the model and smooth comfort steering. New, narrower tires reduce its turning circle by approximately half a meter while maximum passenger capacity and luggage compartment capacity remain unchanged, and a further developed, more powerful heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system together with proven service sets adds comfort for drivers and passengers.
Previously from Daimler Truck AG
Earlier in October 2026, Daimler Buses and its ELCH project partners took a joint drive in their battery-electric coach demonstrator in Neu-Ulm, described as a milestone in a publicly funded effort to build a coach with more than 500 kilometers of range. Today's update covers the combustion-engine, electronic and cockpit side of the coach portfolio, a separate line of work from that electric demonstrator effort.

Why this matters
Bus operators are the main beneficiaries: the source promises lower fuel consumption, long maintenance intervals, high vehicle availability and fewer workshop visits made solely for software updates. Drivers gain new assistance systems, a modern cockpit and quieter running, while passengers are affected through comfort items such as the more powerful air-conditioning on the Setra S 531 DT.
Terms in This Story
- Over-the-air update
- A software update delivered remotely to a vehicle's control units without a workshop visit.
- Diesel particulate filter
- An exhaust aftertreatment component that traps soot particles from diesel engine exhaust.
- SCR system
- Selective catalytic reduction, an exhaust aftertreatment system that uses a urea-based fluid to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions.
- Turning circle
- The size of the circle a vehicle traces when steered to full lock, a measure of how tightly it can maneuver.
