What Happened

Mitch Evans, the most successful driver in Formula E history, will race for the Opel GSE Formula E Team from the 2026/27 season. The 32-year-old New Zealander brings a record 16 victories and ten years of experience to the new German works team. He will partner rookie Théo Pourchaire, with Sophia Flörsch as test and development driver. Opel says the pairing of a proven race winner and young talent underpins its ambition to compete at the front from the start.

We have secured our dream team. Mitch Evans was the preferred candidate for our Opel GSE Formula E Team from the very beginning. His commitment once again underlines the seriousness of the entire project.
Jörg Schrott, Opel Motorsport Director and Team Principal
I immediately felt how much energy and passion Opel is putting into the Formula E project. The team isn’t just coming into the series to compete: Opel is here to win, and that's exactly what I aspire to.

Opel's road to Formula E
  1. March 2026

Opel announced its commitment to the Opel GSE Formula E Team.

  2. This week

Mitch Evans made his first official appearance in Opel colours at the international media drive of the new battery-electric Opel Corsa GSE.

  3. October 12, 2026

Opel will unveil the final design of the 2026/27 race car at the Paris Motor Show.

After the March announcement, Opel presented the Opel GSE 27FE prototype in Le Castellet, and now the driver line-up is complete. Evans said he was proud to be an Opel works driver and that after ten years with another manufacturer it was time for a fresh challenge; he called the leap to GEN4 cars the perfect moment to start something new, with the world championship title his big goal and a score to settle after narrowly missing it at the final weekend in London. Opel is using Formula E as a stage for its electric performance models, with the Mokka GSE already on the road and the Corsa GSE launching this year and making its trade fair debut at the Paris Motor Show in October. Combined WLTP values for the Mokka GSE are 18.5 kWh/100 km and 0 g/km CO2.

Previously from Opel Automobile GmbH

Opel had earlier signed 22-year-old FIA Formula 2 champion Théo Pourchaire as its first regular driver for the Opel GSE Formula E Team. Pourchaire was the first driver announced for Opel's new works team.

Why this matters

This is Opel's clearest signal yet that its new works team intends to win from the start, pairing the series' most successful driver with a promising rookie. Evans brings 16 victories and ten years of experience; Pourchaire adds young talent. Opel is also using Formula E to showcase its electric performance cars, including the Corsa GSE launching this year.
