Opel Astra F Turns 35: The Compact That Became Opel's Bestseller with 4.13 Million Units

Thirty-five years after its 1991 debut, the Opel Astra F remains the brand's top seller, with 4.13 million units built through 1997.

Astra F units produced (1991–1997)
4.13 million
Astra Electric WLTP range
454 km
Impuls III prototype test distance
350,000 km
Impuls III top speed
120 km/h

What Happened

When the Opel Astra F debuted in 1991, it was the seventh generation of Opel's compact model and the first to carry the Astra nameplate, shared with Vauxhall. Produced from 1991 to 1997, it became Opel's bestselling model so far, with around 4.13 million units built. Designed for an era of growing environmental awareness, it offered new safety systems, more space, and recyclable materials.

The Astra F marked a major step forward in the compact class with its Opel Safety System: dual steel bars in the doors, seat ramps to prevent submarining, and front seat belt tensioners. In 1994, full-size driver and front passenger airbags became standard. The body was more spacious than the Kadett E, with the windscreen 74 millimetres further forward and up to 50 millimetres more headroom and knee room, while the GSi achieved a drag coefficient of 0.30 cD. Environmental care included polypropylene interior parts with a resource-efficient recycling process and recycled-material bumper supports and wheel arch linings. The engine range comprised 1.4, 1.6, 1.8, and 2.0-litre petrol units with three-way catalytic converters and a 1.7-litre diesel with a newly developed oxidation catalyst.

Astra F innovations and GSi highlights
  • Multi-Info Display: world first, combining radio, on-board computer, and check control
  • Clean Air System: first in the compact class, protecting occupants from pollen, dust, and dirt
  • Electronic traction control: first in the market segment on the GSi 16V
  • GSi 16V: 110 kW (150 hp) 2.0-litre with 16 valves and dual overhead camshafts (base GSi: 85 kW / 115 hp)

The Astra F also served as an innovation platform for electric drive. From 1993 to 1997, ten 'Impuls III' prototypes covered 350,000 kilometres on the Baltic island of Rügen — five with a 45 kW (61 hp) nickel-cadmium battery and five with a 42 kW (57 hp) sodium nickel-chloride battery, all with a three-phase asynchronous motor. The Impuls III reached a top speed of 120 km/h and a maximum range of 150 kilometres; from 1997 to 1999, the prototypes operated in Aachen, Maastricht, and Liège.

The current Opel Astra, designed, engineered, and built in Rüsselsheim, continues the efficiency focus. The new Astra Electric offers up to 454 kilometres of range (WLTP2), the plug-in hybrid's purely electric range has been increased, and the lineup also includes hybrid and diesel options. Highlights include the illuminated Opel Blitz emblem (a first for the Astra), the adaptive, glare-free Intelli-Lux HD light with over 50,000 pixels, standard Intelli-Seats with ergonomic recess, and many recycled materials in the Sports Tourer interior.

Current Opel Astra powertrains (WLTP1 combined values)
  • Electric: 15.3–15.8 kWh/100 km, 0 g/km CO2, label A
  • Plug-in Hybrid: 12.6–13.0 kWh electricity/100 km plus 2.2–2.3 l petrol/100 km, 49–53 g/km CO2, label B; 5.4–5.6 l/100 km when battery discharged, label D
  • Hybrid: 4.9–5.1 l/100 km, 109–114 g/km CO2, label C
  • 1.5 Diesel: 4.9–5.1 l/100 km, 130–134 g/km CO2, label D

Previously from Opel Automobile GmbH

Opel has been celebrating its heritage: on 3 August it marked 60 years of the Rekord C, the 1966 redesign that became its first million-selling car and a motorsport legend. The Astra F anniversary continues that pattern of commemorating record-selling models.

Background drawn from MotorClaw's earlier coverage of Opel Automobile GmbH's official releases.

Why this matters

The Astra F shows how a car can succeed by addressing the concerns of its era — safety, space, and lower emissions — and laid the groundwork for today's Opel Astra. The current generation, built in Rüsselsheim, continues that approach with a wide range of powertrains, from electric and plug-in hybrid to hybrid and diesel. For buyers, the Astra remains a mainstream compact that emphasizes efficiency and comfort.
