Renault unveils Niagara pickup, first of 14 new models planned outside Europe by 2030

Renault has unveiled the Niagara, a Latin America-focused pickup that kicks off the brand's plan to launch 14 new models outside Europe by 2030.

What Happened

Renault Niagara is a new pickup designed for Latin America and the first vehicle in Renault Group's product offensive outside Europe under its futuREady strategic plan. It is the first of 14 new Renault models planned outside Europe by 2030 and supports the brand's ambition to generate 50% of its sales outside Europe by that year. Sales are mainly planned in Argentina, Brazil and Colombia. Niagara sits in the light commercial vehicle segment, halfway between a traditional pickup and a C-SUV, combining load-carrying capacity and off-road ability with SUV comfort and connectivity.

Niagara: pickup capability meets C-SUV comfort
Pickup fundamentals
Robustness, load capacity, a functional cargo bed, plus obstacle-crossing and towing capabilities
C-SUV comfort
A chassis optimised to reduce vibrations and increase stability, a spacious cabin with smart storage, OpenR Link multimedia with Google built-in and 26 driving aids
Dimensions
4.91 m long and 1.72 m high
Onboard technology and comfort
  • OpenR Link multimedia system with Google built-in, including Google Maps, Google Assistant and Google Play apps
  • Google Gemini, an AI-powered conversational assistant able to understand natural-language commands
  • Dual digital display with a 10.1-inch multimedia screen and a 10.2-inch digital instrument panel
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, wired and wireless, plus a wireless smartphone charger in the center console
  • Multi-Sense driving modes, up to 48 customizable LED ambient lighting colours and My Renault connected services for maintenance tracking, service notifications and appointment planning
  • 26 driving aids (ADAS) including Stop & Go adaptive cruise control, Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keeping Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition and Blind Spot Warning, plus a 360° panoramic camera and parking assistance

Latin America is one of three high-potential markets targeted by the futuREady plan, alongside India and South Korea. Renault says the challenge is to diversify its growth drivers in regions where demand is rising sharply, in order to reduce risks and seize new opportunities. The group has been present in the region for several decades and points to recent launches such as Kardian and Boreal as evidence of the region's contribution to its development. A future hybrid version paired with 4x4 transmission is meant to help Renault reach 50% electrified sales outside Europe by 2030.

Renault's Latin America milestones
  1. 1960s

Renault builds its industrial heritage in Latin America, the foundation for its regional roots

  2. Since 2016

More than 250,000 Renault Oroch pickups sold

  3. By 2030

14 new Renault models planned outside Europe, with targets of 50% of sales and 50% electrified sales outside Europe

Niagara was designed and developed in Latin America by design and engineering teams from several countries, and it will be produced at the Renault Santa Isabel plant in Córdoba, Argentina, which has become a specialised hub for light commercial vehicles intended for Latin America. That plant has already produced more than 3.5 million vehicles, including iconic models such as the Dauphine, Renault 4 and Trafic. The pickup was validated through a testing programme of nearly 800,000 kilometres driven in Argentina, Brazil and Colombia, combined with evaluations at Renault's European validation centres, both on-road and off-road and in varied climate and usage conditions.

Powertrains
  • Petrol and Flex Fuel engines, depending on the market
  • A hybrid powertrain paired with 4x4 transmission to be offered later, made possible by the RGMP pickup platform

Previously from Renault

Renault's push into those markets comes as its business in one of them was growing. In early September we reported that Renault India recorded 2,842 domestic wholesales in August, taking its January-August volume to 31,979 vehicles, up 47.9% year on year.

Why this matters

Niagara is the first step in Renault's plan to earn half of its sales outside Europe by 2030, shaping the brand's future in Latin America, India and South Korea. It matters for buyers in Argentina, Brazil and Colombia, where sales are mainly planned, and for workers at the Santa Isabel plant in Córdoba that will build it.
