What Happened
The Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective of designers, engineers and craftspeople has unveiled four new craft techniques: 3D leather hand-sculpting, 3D metal hand-sculpting, 3D veneers and beadwork application. These techniques are showcased in two Phantom Gallery concept pieces—'Legacy Craft: Inspired by Still Life' and 'Legacy Craft: Inspired by The Draught'—which will be displayed at London Craft Week in May 2026.
The first artwork features a still-life arrangement of fruit and flowers using 3D leather sculpting and beadwork. The hydrangeas are made from 50 hand-sculpted and painted leather flowers, while pomegranate seeds are formed with 76 hand-sewn beads. The piece required over 250 hours of handwork.
The second artwork combines 3D metal hand-sculpting and layered 3D veneer with brass elements. A jewel-like flower at the center is made from five layers of brass, each cut by waterjet and hand-engraved with over 50 lines per petal, taking more than 45 hours. The composition incorporates historical references: draught, scribing, strapwork, and ferramenta.
“Our Bespoke Collective looks to the history of decorative arts and asks how those techniques might be reinterpreted for the surfaces of a Rolls-Royce motor car. The concepts show how hand and machine can work in concert, how a 17th-century still life can become a modern sculptural form, and how Rolls-Royce is both a custodian and an accelerator of rare craft skills.”
- 3D leather hand-sculpting for realistic flower forms
- 3D metal hand-sculpting for intricate jewelry-like details
- Layered 3D veneer with brass inserts for faceted relief
- Beadwork using 76 individual beads for seed replication
