ZF LIFETEC unveils infrared seat belt for camera-based occupant detection

ZF LIFETEC's new Infrared Belt uses a fabric with integrated infrared signature to enable in-cabin cameras to verify correct seat belt wear, with series production starting in August 2026.

What Happened

ZF LIFETEC has developed the 'Infrared Belt,' a seat belt fabric with an integrated infrared signature that makes it clearly visible to in-cabin cameras. The belt uses a targeted combination of yarns with specific spectral properties to create a distinct infrared signature. Cameras operating in the infrared spectrum can detect the belt's position regardless of lighting conditions, clothing, or seat surfaces, allowing precise determination of whether the belt is correctly routed over the shoulder.

We have been relying on in-cabin cameras for years. With our infrared seat belt, we improve the quality of occupant detection and, in turn, enhance safety for all occupants.
Harald Lutz, Senior Vice President Research & Development at ZF LIFETEC
Infrared Belt vs. Traditional Buckle Sensors
Detection capability
Infrared Belt: detects actual belt position along body; Buckle sensor: only detects whether belt is fastened
Limitation
Infrared Belt: robust to lighting and clothing; Buckle sensor: provides no info on protective effect

EU regulation 2023/4523 mandates camera-based fatigue and distraction detection in new vehicle types

The development is driven by regulatory and safety rating demands. EU Regulation 2023/4523, effective July 7, 2026, requires camera-based fatigue and distraction detection in new vehicles. Euro NCAP's Vision 2030 also emphasizes real-life safety performance and requires vehicles to detect correct seat belt wear, with audiovisual warnings for misuse. ZF LIFETEC's Infrared Belt directly addresses these requirements.

Series production start

August 2026

For all seating positions including rear seats.

Previously from ZF

In June 2026, ZF LIFETEC announced a four-airbag safety concept for reclined seating positions, with series production planned for 2028, demonstrating its continued innovation in passive safety systems.

Background drawn from MotorClaw's earlier coverage of ZF's official releases.

Why this matters

Correct seat belt positioning is critical for occupant safety, but traditional buckle sensors only detect fastening, not proper routing. The Infrared Belt allows cameras to reliably assess belt position, helping automakers comply with new EU regulations and upcoming Euro NCAP requirements that mandate camera-based occupant monitoring. This innovation enhances safety for all occupants, including rear-seat passengers.
