Maruti Links Smaller EVs to a Wider Charging Network in India
Maruti Suzuki says it will add smaller electric cars in India once its charging network is ready, with more than 2,000 exclusive points installed and a much larger national network planned.

What Happened
At Maruti's annual meeting, Hisashi Takeuchi linked the arrival of smaller electric models to better charging coverage in India. For now, the e Vitara is the brand's only electric car sold in India.
The carmaker says it has installed more than 2,000 exclusive chargers across over 1,100 cities through partnerships with 13 charge-point operators. It is working on highway coverage and plans charger locations roughly 5 to 10 kilometers apart in the top 100 cities.
Maruti's longer-range plan calls for a far broader nationwide charging network before the decade closes. Takeuchi also said the company has about 90 percent of India's EV exports and ships vehicles to nearly 120 countries.
Maruti will keep funding internal-combustion, hybrid and compressed-gas models as it develops electric cars. New plants are being designed to build different powertrain types on the same production line so output can shift with demand.
Why this matters
India's largest carmaker is tying the timing of mass-market EV expansion to charging availability rather than treating the powertrain decision as a standalone product launch. The plan also shows Maruti keeping EVs, hybrids, CNG and conventional cars within one flexible manufacturing strategy.
