BMW said iX5 Hydrogen prototypes are running a test programme while the third-generation fuel cell system enters a new assembly phase in Munich, with Plant Steyr preparing for series production; the model is set to be the group's first hydrogen-powered production vehicle, targeting up to 750 kilometres WLTP and refuelling in under five minutes, with 191 million euros from the German federal government and 82 million euros from Bavaria under the HyPowerDrive project. China's August NEV output reached 1.653 million units, up 18.9 percent, and deliveries 1.643 million, up 17.8 percent, for a record 60.6 percent share of sales, while total vehicle exports hit 1.01 million units. Tata Passenger Electric Mobility and Tata Power said ten jointly branded charging hubs have logged more than 70,000 sessions and over 85,000 hours, targeting 10,000 public points by 2030. Volvo Group will develop an energy park at Mariestad using Volvo BESS storage, expected to come online in 2027.

Autonomy & ADAS
NVIDIA described a three-computer robotaxi stack for training, simulation and in-vehicle computing, saying every major commercial robotaxi programme runs on it, and named Waabi with Uber, TIER IV and Isuzu, Lenovo with SWM, DeepRoute.ai, Tesla, Mercedes-Benz with Uber, Stellantis with Wayve and Uber, Lucid with Nuro and Uber, Hyundai and Kia, and Geely with Zeekr among users of DRIVE AGX Thor and DRIVE Hyperion. WeRide, Uber and AVOMO said Spain's Directorate General of Traffic granted the country's first national permit for Level 4 autonomous passenger vehicles, with Madrid the first of 15 cities and 11 more planned by 2030. Pony.ai and Verne began fully driverless robotaxi test rides with passengers in Zagreb on a 22-kilometer airport route. Aptiv said its next-generation ADAS smart camera entered mass production on a European vehicle programme of a Chinese NEV maker, designed for Euro NCAP 2026 five-star requirements.

Manufacturing & Supply Chain
Nissan said it will reorganise its Japanese plants around vehicle families, making Tochigi its High Tech Hub for sports cars, electrified vehicles and minivans, and Kyushu its Global Model Hub for B- and C-segment vehicles, with Skyline, Patrol and a new global B-segment car added to the line-up. Audi began production of the fully electric A2 e-tron at Ingolstadt in September 2026, with development to production readiness 21 months shorter than previous projects, more than 1,200 production components reused and over 450 industrial PCs saved through Edge Cloud 4 Production. Ford will spend $1 billion on a new paint shop at Kentucky Truck Plant and expects to break ground before the end of this year. Ultraviolette Automotive will build its BIGGA factory at SIPCOT Shoolagiri near Hosur, starting at 2.5 lakh vehicles a year and laid out to reach 5 lakh units.

Deals & Partnerships
Volvo Cars and Geely Auto finalized their previously announced commercial partnership under which Volvo Cars becomes the exclusive distributor of Lynk & Co vehicles in Europe from January 2027, using its retailers and service network, with the Lynk & Co business at Volvo Cars led by Martin Persson reporting to Chief Commercial Officer Erik Severinson. Lynk & Co said the arrangement, announced in Gothenburg on September 10, 2026, is designed to support its next phase of growth and improve customer access across Europe, while global product development, certification and operations outside Europe remain with Geely Auto Group.
Product & Launches
Renault unveiled the Niagara, a Latin America-focused pickup and the first of 14 new Renault models planned outside Europe by 2030 under the futuREady plan, with sales mainly planned in Argentina, Brazil and Colombia and production at the Santa Isabel plant in Córdoba, Argentina, which has built more than 3.5 million vehicles; a future hybrid version with 4x4 transmission is intended to help Renault reach 50 percent electrified sales outside Europe by 2030. Volvo Cars refreshed the XC40, EX40 and EC40 with an 11.2-inch screen, Google Gemini, automatic emergency braking and steering, and up to 584 kilometres of range; orders open in selected markets today, production begins later in autumn, and a Black Edition is available.

Hyundai Motor Group will host the HMG Tech Talent Forum at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center on September 17 to 18, with nine affiliates and partners including Hyundai Motor, Kia, Hyundai America Technical Center, HMGMA, Boston Dynamics, Motional and 42dot, offering Tech Sessions across AI, robotics, autonomous driving, smart manufacturing, SW/IT and hydrogen, energy and battery, and 16 displays featuring MobED, Spot, the IONIQ 5 robotaxi and the Hyundai CRATER Concept.
